MacArthur Transit Village (MTV) is a proposed, mixed-use Transit-Oriented Development located adjacent to the MacArthur BART Station in North Oakland. The result of a BART Citizen’s Planning Committee (CPC) effort, the project seeks to redevelop and revitalize this underutilized site to create a vibrant transit-oriented community that enhances bicycle and pedestrian use, with increased and enhanced access to the BART station and connecting public transit lines.
Project Description
MacArthur Transit Village will provide 624 new housing units on a 7.76 acre site, of which 516 units will be market rate and 108 units will be below market rate. The development includes construction of five buildings for high density, multifamily housing, with a new 478-space parking garage for BART patrons and guests. In addition, 42,500 square feet of local commercial and retail space will be constructed, along with 5,000 square feet of space for community use. Phase 1 of construction will commence in May 2011, which includes demolition of adjacent motel properties, along with construction of the BART parking garage and site infrastructure. Construction of affordable apartments will follow in 2013, along with development of the remaining parcels phased from 2015 through 2021.
MTV Selected for LEED Neighborhood Development Pilot Program
The U.S. Green Building Council selected MTV to be part of its new Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Neighborhood Development Pilot Program. LEED for Neighborhood Development recognizes projects that successfully protect and enhance the overall health, natural environment and quality of life in our communities. As part of the pilot program, MTV had the opportunity to help shape the LEED ND program, serving as an example of Transit-Oriented Development. MTV received a LEED Gold Level rating under the first phase of the program.
